One of the big differences between the human brain and the brains of animals is the increase in neuron connections in the human brain. The absolute number of brain cells actually remains relatively constant across different species, but there are huge differences in their degree of interconnection. These interconnections are what allow our brains to function as they do and allow complex cognitive processes that animals have not developed as well, such as speaking a language. That sounds a bit complicated, but to explain in a simpler way – think of your smart phone vs. an older mobile phone. Both are roughly the same size. But because the smart phone has so many more connections – to a camera, to the internet, to radio signals etc., it can do an awful lot more.
