My current work is largely routine duties in our radiotherapy department, as we have been short staffed for quite a while. This include planning treatments, ensuring the machines are working correctly etc etc. However hopefully I’ll have more time for investigating specific issues, one of which is how good our imaging is for a certain type of lung cancer treatment. This is quite tricky as the tumour moves in 3 dimensions whilst the patient is being treated, so we have to be very careful that it is in just the right place. What I want to do is review the images every patient has, for lots of patients, and see if our current system is good enough or could be better? For instance if we can predict well enough from the start how the tumour will move, maybe we can reduce the number of images we take? This would mean quicker treatment times for patients, and less extra radiation. 😀
